Pearly Royal Rugby Shorts
These shorts are cut to mimic traditional British Columbia rugby shorts and are inspired by Pearly Kings and Queens' costumes. They are black and feature pearl button fleurettes and trim along the side seams.
Around the turn-of-the-century a group of English traders started adorning their clothes with pearl buttons to drawn attention to their charitable fundraising efforts. The Pearly Kings and Queens and affiliated organizations continue their charitable work to this day.
The buttons used on this piece were sourced from a 120+ year old factory in Iowa that closed. The pearl button industry hit its peak between 1890 and 1920 and this factory once supplied 1/3 of the world's pearl buttons. Each pearl button was originally cut, sanded and polished by hand.
