This workwear jacket is made from an 1870/1880's charm quilt. As the story goes...young women, let’s say teenagers, would collect hundreds to thousands of unique dress weight cottons to make these quilts. Some quilts have up to 2,000 individual printed fabrics. Friends and family would share prints with each other...it was said that the first man you met after you finished your Charm Quilt was the man you’d marry.” This type of quilt may have been connected to the trend of Button Charm Strings (of young women collecting and stringing 999 buttons together, with the 1000th button being supplied by her future husband and strung after they wed). This jacket is made up rectangular patches of calicos, plaids, and various prints.
